Overall I think the album is a solid follow up to "Exhibit A." It's much more complex and diverse and the production presents the band in a much rawer and live sounding fashion. I didn't have a tracklist when I first got the album, so I actually did tear up when I heard "The Drawing Board" on there. I had thought that awesome song was lost in the lineup shuffle and I was so happy to hear it in a big, brassy polished version on the album. The horns also add a nice touch to "Wooden Heart," one of the band's best tracks of the last couple years. I also like the versions of "Concrete" and "Gates of Hell" on the album. Different and nice representations of two songs I've been hearing live for a while. I've already discussed "Temporary Blues," but having a recorded version to listen to over and over again and analyze has softened the blow. Having the band introduce a song as "Temporary Blues" two years ago and then pull out that thing, that was a horrible moment (also because I live in NYC and was SUPER PUMPED to hear a rarely played favorite of mine, only to have it be nothing like my baby). "GMF" is a weird song to be sure, very Ray Davies in it's narrative. But I do love it.

The only bit of the album that I'm iffy on is ending it with two mid-tempo songs, "Off Track" and "All I Ask." "Exhibit A" left you wanting more by closing with the bombastic "Harder To Ignore" and "Circus." This album just kinda sounds tired and ready to go to sleep when it's over. With they'd put "Mosis Ptosis" on the end (which, also, not that big of a fan of the recorded version that was on the vinyl; WHY change that keyboard part?!).

Overall, I think this was my favorite album of last year.

...and the production presents the band in a much rawer and live sounding fashion.

That's an interesting observation.  Historically, the biggest gripe about the band's studio material has been that it fails to capture the magic of their live shows.  I haven't really thought about that aspect of it since I got the new record.  I'll have to ponder that one.

Juan, you left off the bonus tracks.  If they'd been on there, I'd have voted for "Now You Know."  I've been totally addicted to that song since I first heard it live at MTSU three years ago.

GMF and Off Track for me. Concrete and The Drawing Board were very close runners-up. I am really enjoying the production on this album especially compared to Exhibit A.

i don't agree at all that this album is asleep towards the end, i think it's perfect for repeat listens.

you're everybody's second home
always trying to get me alone
an easy way to lose it all
always there when all else fails

i voted for "drawing board" and "lions."  if i could have picked one more it would have been "gmf."  and there's not really a song i skip every time.

i was listening to this album when i was driving my parents home from the airport.  when we were almost home my mom asked "is this rod stewart?"  the volume was pretty low, but still.

And that circles back around to a Rod Stewart, which WHAT was the song that Jamie Carroll called the Rod Stewart song back forever ago? Did this become something? ENLIGHTEN ME!

Digsy, I looked at the setlist for the next show (Boro, 12-7-01) and it also has a reference to this song.  There is a comment in the thread from three years later where someone asks the same question.  And I answered "Disco".  Fast forward to right now, and I have no idea what song that is.  Does anyone remember "Disco"?  Not "Discotheque".  Maybe I have a recording of it?
