Because we are all in super excited new album mode...
I was lucky enough to get a chance to hear the "Wilderness" and thought I might be able to wet
the proverbial whistle with a couple descriptions of the lesser known tracks... so spoiler alert, I guess.
1 Content: Solid Features track, along the lines of a GMF maybe... great rhythm part to this song and you can really appreciate what Mark does to give this track its sense of direction... "were they happy? and were their hearts Content? I hope they felt like their time here was well spent..."
2 KIDS: Probably the "rock" song of the album a real head knocker they are playing it live now, Matt sings on:
"I got mine just like my old man got his... ohhh K. I. D. S. KIDS!"
3 Another One: The unabashed Pop song on the CD, the Features do it so well, I have always thought the best rock songs skewed a little poppy, and Another One fits the bill, its hard not to smile when you listen to this song about never making your lady quite happy enough. "This is just Another One aimed right at your heart... this is just another one bound to miss the mark..."
4 Big Momma Gonna Whip Us Good: Im sure we all know this track well enough...
5 How it Starts: Very driving rock song, the band let it rip live a couple weeks back and it was fantastic... Hand claps and Matt's whaling Ohhh Ohh Ohhs and all.
6 RAMBO: We can all now hear in its entirety!
7 Offer Up: More along the lines of Another One; not in the overt poppy-ness as much as not falling in the dark rock side of the line that holds the likes of How it Starts, KIDS, Content
8 Golden Comb: Im gonna chalk this up to have being heard by most of us... but I think its a great representation of 1/2 of this album
9 Fats Domino: A totally different Features track then anything Ive heard... just a great, ballad-like track where the story teller pleads not for his love to come back, but for her to not walk out the door with his music collection. ... With maybe my favorite part on the album Matt calls his best Johny Cash singing/talking vibe where he puts his case on the line...
"I know Im gonna miss you baby and I hate to see you leave but I cant let you walk out that door baby... with my LP's..."
It really give me the feel of a great song U2 did with Cash called the Wanderer... the band even gives Matts voice a done of depth while they fill in the back round of his speech with some well placed ooohhh ohhhs.
10 Love is... Matt says that this song was a late addition to the album but is actually quite old (I think he said 12 years - you guys may know better then I do...) That being said it doesn't feel like old features. The Keys are a different feel on this song and I think like in Big Momma they kind of change course mid track and starts into a driving anthem that just makes you tap your toes..
11 Chapter 3: I believe I heard this song was being played live... I haven't had the chance to see it but I hope it continues, it is really great, starting with a few bars of just guitar it quickly switches gears into rocking song, which they bridge with a nice break down in the refrain where Matt hits some great notes...
and you will be happy to note that the boys have stuck to their guns and kept all 11 songs clocked in at around 36 minutes... never feels long enough!
Hope that helps... or makes you even more excited.
